Labeling relations your way

Built-in types

Every relation starts with one of the built-in relationship types:

Creating a custom type

When editing a pill on a relation, type any label that is not in the built-in list and press Enter to create it as a custom relationship. The new type is saved to your graph immediately.

Custom relationships start with a default color. You can change it in Settings (the button at the bottom of the sidebar).

Changing a custom color

Open Settings and scroll to the relationship color section. Each custom type you have created is listed there. Click a type to expand a color picker and choose from the preset swatches. The color updates everywhere that relationship appears on the canvas.

Directional vs. mutual

By default a relation is mutual — one relationship label shared by both people. When the two sides of a relation are different (for example, one person considers someone a friend while the other sees them as an enemy), you can mark both directions.

To do this: create a relationship from person A to person B, then select person B and Shift-click person A to draw a second relation in the opposite direction. Each direction then gets its own independent label and color.

The relationship key

When enabled, a small legend appears in the top-left corner of the canvas listing every relationship type currently in use and its color. Toggle it under Settings > Show relationship key.
